Ramadan is a sacred time for those who practice the Muslim religion. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims refrain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, participating in the fast to bring oneself closer to God, practice self-control, and find compassion to those less fortunate. Once the sun sets, it’s permitted to break the fast, which many do through nutritious, energy enhancing foods.
Why is Produce Important for Ramadan
Despite being an occasion all about fasting, produce plays an important role in Ramadan. Different varieties are packed full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, all of which play a part in staying healthy when breaking a fast.
Energy Enhancing Produce to Break Ramadan’s Fast
- Dried Dates: Dried dates are one of the most popular varieties for breaking fasts. They are chalk full of energy-enhancing qualities, like potassium and fiber.
- Avocados: Hass avocados are known for being an excellent source of fiber, but did you know they also contain sources of protein, potassium, and vitamin C? Vitamin C is known to support white blood cells and keep the body healthy against diseases.
- Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are good for breaking fasts because of their sources of beta-carotene, vitamin B6, potassium, and fiber. Different varieties of sweet potato may have varying levels of each of these. For example, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes have the highest amount of beta-carotene compared to white or purple varieties.
- Oranges: You may be starting to notice a trend within each of these varieties. Like the others listed above, certain orange varieties, like cara cara, are good sources of fiber and potassium during Ramadan.
- Beets: Did you know that both the beetroots and greens are edible? And not only that, but both are packed full of nutrition? The beetroots themselves, which is the part of the beet most typically consumed, are excellent sources of Vitamin C, fiber, folate, and Vitamin B. The greens contain high amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
